Another year has gone by - how does Father Time get it to go so fast?
It was a busy year for Greek to Go - personally and professionally. One son graduated high school, the other college. A family reunion in Greece in August, births, deaths, health challenges. New stores to stock, more catering, partnerships with MSU (can't wait to showcase that next year!) and extra help to get through the busy weeks.
Phew! What a year!
But, there's really not much time to be nostalgic. The flour and powdered sugar have been flying. It's vasilopita time - the cake that traditionally rings in the new year. Covered in powdered sugar with a gold coin (or six!) hidden inside, the receiver is said to have good luck throughout the year. It's a fun tradition in our home, the boys excited for who will get the coin.
On New Year's Day families cut the vasilopita to bless the house and bring good luck for the new year. This is usually done at the midnight of New Year's Eve... At midnight the sign of the cross is etched with a knife across the cake. A piece of cake is sliced for each member of the family and any visitors present at the time, by order of age from eldest to youngest. Slices are also cut for various symbolic people or groups, depending on local and family tradition... Nowadays there is often a prearranged gift, money, or otherwise, to be given to the coin recipient...
Regardless of how you slice it (hehehe!), it's a wonderful way to bring family together at the close of one year and the start of the next. A fresh year is almost here; 2017 will make memories of its own. We hope you're along with us for the ride.
